Local dignitaries and participants of the Riverside Senior Center gathered at the construction site of the new Oaks at Riverview to celebrate a milestone on June 18, 2008. Attendees including Brian Blair, Hillsborough County Commissioner; Pat Bean, Hillsborough County Administrator; Manus O'Donnell, Assistant County Administrator; Stephanie Brown-Gilmore, representative from the Tampa Housing Authority; and Bart Banks, Acting Director of Aging Services signed a board that will become a part of the new roof. The Oaks at Riverview, located at 101 E. Kirby St. in Tampa, will replace the Riverside Senior Center once it opens in early 2009. The Senior Center is a $1.6 million, 8,000 sq/foot facility that is being built on land that was donated by the Tampa Housing Authority. In 2001, the County entered into an agreement with the Tampa Housing Authority to construct a senior center on the site of its $19.9 million HOPE VI project. The site currently has 250 low-income rental units, including a 76 unit senior housing facility and 90 single- family homes and townhomes.
The Oaks at Riverview Senior Center will provide an array of services that include adult day care, case management, congregate dining, computer training, educational and wellness classes, fitness programs, health assessments, information and referral, support groups, transportation, and other senior related activities and supportive services.
