Due to meningitis and encephalitis Henry became deaf at the age of three.
He learned to read lips. His mother used the Mirrielees system to understand
language. He became a skilled lip reader. Doris Irene Mirrielees believed
deaf children could live productive lives if they understand language.
His first job was with the Evening Journal in Wilmington DE.
In 1965 he moved to Chicago and worked for the Daily News. In
1978 he was hired to work for the Chicago Sun-Times and continues
to work there today. In 1990 he published What's That Pig Outdoors?
A Memoir of Deafness.
