Mission Statement
 

Hillsborough County Commissioners present nine awards throughout the year to a residents, organizations or associations for a variety of reasons - but they all encompass contribution to our community. These recipients are recognized for their selflessness, triumph, courage and innovation, and they are examples to all residents.

Latest Recognitions and Awards

Moral Courage Award
 

The Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners created the Moral Courage Award in 1992 to recognize residents and community groups who demonstrate exceptional ethical behavior and the moral courage to challenge the actions of government. This award is presented during a County Commission Regular Meeting and only when individual or groups merit recognition.

Eligibility

  • Any resident or group of Hillsborough County, except for elected officials or individuals whose primary occupation is the activity for which they are nominated.
  • Resident or group must have courageously challenged government actions for the betterment of the County and its citizens.
Nominating Procedures
  • Nomination forms are required. Incomplete or illegible forms cannot be considered.
  • Nomination forms must be received by Hillsborough County on or before the deadline.
  • No more than three pages of pertinent supporting information may be submitted with the form.
  • The nominee must have consented to the nomination.

Selection Process

The nominee selected must best meet the definition of moral courage:

Moral: Concerned with goodness or badness of character or disposition or with the principles of what is right and what is wrong.
Courage: Readiness to face and endure danger or difficulty, bravery.
Moral Courage: Courage to face disapproval rather than abandon the right course of action.

The Citizens Advisory Committee reviews all nominations and chooses a finalist for the Commission to approve. The Citizens Advisory Committee may choose not to submit a recommendation for the Moral Courage Award if by majority vote the committee feels that none of the nominees meet the criteria.

The decision of the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners is final. The nomination form and supporting information become the property of Hillsborough County and cannot be returned.
