Hillsborough County celebrated small, minority and disadvantaged business achievements at the 10th Annual Minority Business Enterprise/Small Business Enterprise (MBE/SBE) Awards Luncheon Tuesday, September 16. The winning companies were:
-- Norma Oosting, president of Florida Contractors Video, Inc., Minority Business Enterprise Achievement Award.
-- Joseph Kokolakis, president of J. Kokolakis Contracting, Inc., Non-Minority Business Corporate Award.
-- Thomas Uzdavinis, president of Landscaping Tune-Ups, Inc., Small Business Enterprise Achievement Award.
Oosting established Florida Contractors Video in 1986 with a camera that didn't even meet the specifications of the professional camera required for some contracts in the construction industry. After completing a few small contracts, she was able to purchase a professional camera that met industry standards. The company has been involved in numerous projects, small and large, throughout Hillsborough County and the state of Florida.
Kokolakis Contracting, founded in 1972, has successfully completed more than $1 billion in public works projects, and its annual revenue exceeds $110,000,000. The company's projects include a three-story addition to James A. Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa for laboratory space and operating rooms; a 52,000 square foot Military Leadership Center for the University of South Florida; and the 28,000 square foot, state of the art new consolidated Tampa Airport Rescue and Firefighting Facility located at Tampa International Airport.
Landscaping Tune-Ups is a family-owned and operated landscaping company with more than 27 years of experience, specializing in commercial and residential landscape design. The company has completed many high profile projects in the Tampa Bay area and throughout the State of Florida for federal and state governments, Hillsborough County, and private industry. Landscaping Tune-Ups partnered with The Haskell Company on the Falkenburg Road Jail Project in 2002. Several of the company's projects have been featured by Southeast Construction Magazine.
Since 1984, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners has worked to promote the growth and development of disadvantaged, minority and women business enterprises. In 1992, the Commission added the small business enterprise to address the challenges they face. Since then, the County has implemented a number of programs and services aimed directly at these businesses.
