Classified Job Opportunities

You apply for all Classified Jobs through the Hillsborough County Civil Service Office. The Civil Service Office then forwards qualified job applications to the 22 Agencies it serves for interviews and hiring. Classified Jobs are covered by the Florida Law that empowers the Hillsborough County Civil Service Board (Chapter 2000-445, Laws of Florida) and the Rules the Board implements. Employees in Classified Jobs can appeal dismissals and some other management actions to the Civil Service Board.

Approximately 9,000 of the total 9,600 regular full-time Hillsborough County employees are in Classified Jobs. Classified Jobs cover a very wide range of job duties and responsibilities. Starting pay for Classified Jobs ranges from approximately $6.47 per hour to over $32.00 per hour.

Unclassified
(Management) Job Opportunities

You apply for Unclassified County Jobs through the Human Resources or Personnel Office of the individual Agency with the vacancy. The Civil Service Office is not involved in any aspect of the recruitment, interviewing, or hiring for Unclassified Jobs. Click here to see links to other County Agencies who may have Unclassified Job vacancies posted on the Internet.

Unclassified Jobs are exempt from the Florida Law that empowers the Hillsborough County Civil Service Board (Chapter 96-519, Laws of Florida) and the Rules the Board implements. Employees in Unclassified Jobs serve at the will of their employer and can not appeal any management action to the Civil Service Board. Otherwise, Unclassified Employees enjoy very similar conditions and benefits of employment as do Classified Employees.

Approximately 500 of the total 8,900 regular full-time Hillsborough County employees are in Unclassified Jobs.

Accountant, Crew Leader, Clerk, Computer Programmer, Custodian, Detention Deputy, Engineer/Prof. Engineer, Environmental Technician, Fire Fighter, Food Service Aid, Head Start Teacher, Inspector (plumbing, electric, etc.), Laborer, Library Assistant, Manager/General Manager, Mason, Paramedic, Park Ranger, Recreation Leader, Secretary, Social Worker, Systems Analyst, Water Plant Operator

Elected or Appointed Officials and their Administrative Assistants Executive Managers (Department Directors, Division Directors, Program Managers, Policy Makers, etc.), Lawyers, Physicians, Part-Time Jobs, Temporary Jobs


Internship Opportunities

You apply for Internship positions through the individual Agency with the vacancy. An internship is considered a temporary position. The Civil Service Office or the Human Resources Department is not involved in any aspect of the recruitment, interviewing, or hiring for Internship. No benefits, paid holidays, vacation or sick time is provided. Interns are only paid for the hours worked. While employed as a temporary employee or intern, the same county policies/procedures apply to the temporary/intern, as apply to other county employees.
