Flooding Preparedness

Before
During a Flood Watch
During an Evacuation
During a Flood
After a Flood
If you were forced to evacuate your area due to flooding, return home only after authorities advise that it is safe.

Enter your home with caution. Despite appearing to be safe and sound, flood damaged homes sometimes collapse without warning.

Snakes, insects, and other animals may have escaped floodwaters by going inside. Proceed with caution.

Take pictures of the damage--both to the house and its contents for insurance claims.

    Look for hazards:
    • Broken or leaking gas lines.
    • Flooded electrical circuits.
    • Submerged furnaces or electrical appliances.
    • Flammable or explosive materials in the water.
    • Throw away food - - including canned goods - - that has come in contact with floodwaters.

Service damaged septic tanks, cesspools, and pits as soon as possible. Damaged sewage systems are health hazards.
