Fire Departments Host Thanksgiving Safety Media Event

Hillsborough County, Fla. (November 20, 2017) - Burning the bird is bad, but a fryer fire is worse. According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving Day is the peak day for home cooking fires, with U.S. fire departments responding to an estimated 1,760 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving Day 2015. To send a very visual message about how to safely prepare and celebrate Thanksgiving dinner, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, Tampa Fire Rescue, Plant City Fire Rescue, Temple Terrace Fire Department, St. Petersburg Fire Rescue, Pinellas Park Fire Department and Pasco County Fire Rescue are joining forces this year to host a joint media event on Wednesday, Nov. 22 at the Hillsborough County Public Safety Operations Complex, 9450 E. Columbus Drive in Tampa.

Each department will cover a safety topic with an interactive demonstration and availability for interviews afterward. This year's topics and demonstrations have been arranged to accommodate more flexibility for live shots and plenty of time for one-on-one interviews throughout the morning. The various departments will be available for demonstrations beginning at 5 a.m. and ending at 10 a.m. The only scheduled live demonstration will be the turkey fryer at 6:30 a.m.

Here are the demonstration topics and corresponding departments.

  • 6:30 a.m. - Turkey frying (only scheduled demonstration)
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue and Tampa Fire Rescue
  • Space heater safety/safe home heating
