Let someone else do the work for free, and learn steps you can take right now to protect against identify theft, courtesy of National Consumer Protection Week and Hillsborough County Consumer & Veterans Services.
Shred Fest Friday: March 2
National Consumer Protection Week is March 4-10. Hillsborough County Consumer & Veterans Services gets a head start with Shred Fest Friday at Town 'N Country Regional Library, 7606 Paula Drive in Tampa, on March 2. Free household document shredding will be available from 10 to 11:30 AM Residents may bring up to three containers of personal documents, such as old tax forms, outdated medical records, pay stubs, credit card applications, bank statements, and old bills to be securely shredded onsite. Non-paper items like CDs, DVDs, x-rays, hard drives, 3-ring binders, and binder clips cannot be accepted.
At 11:45 AM, Consumer & Veterans Services experts will offer tips for avoiding identify theft and protecting your credit during tax season, among other topics. Bring your lunch; beverages and cookies will be provided.
Identity Theft and How to Fight Back: March 6
Consumer & Veterans Services experts will be at the Robert W. Saunders, Sr. Library, 1505 N. Nebraska Ave. in Tampa, on Tuesday, March 6 at 3 PM In this hour long discussion, learn the many ways identity thieves do their worst, and what can be done to limit the chances of becoming a victim. Parents also will learn what they can do now to protect their children's future financial reputation. Register through the calendar feature at HCPLC.org.
