Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall to Visit Hillsborough County

Oct. 26 - 29 - Veterans Memorial Park open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily for this special event

Hillsborough County, Fla. (Oct. 20, 2017) - The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall, a 3/5-scale replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., is coming to Hillsborough County Oct. 26-29.

The traveling exhibit will be at Hillsborough County's Veterans Memorial Park and Rear Admiral LeRoy Collins, Jr., Veterans Museum, 3602 U.S. Highway 301 N. in Tampa. The park will offer special hours for the event: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Admission is free. Schools and other groups are asked to schedule visits in advance by emailing VietnamWall@tampabay.rr.com.

An opening ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 26 at 11 a.m., and will feature keynote speaker U.S. Air Force (Ret.) Capt. Michael T. Burns, a former prisoner of war.

Standing 6 feet tall at the center, covering almost 300 feet from end to end, and inscribed with more than 58,000 names, the traveling memorial wall is a reminder of the great sacrifices made by U.S. military personnel during the Vietnam War.

As a courtesy to Veterans, military members, and their families, a variety of resources will also be provided onsite during the exhibit, including:

  • Disabled American Veterans Mobile Office
  • Military benefit assistance from Hillsborough County Veterans Service Officers
  • Readjustment counseling from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Mobile Vet Center

Hillsborough County Consumer & Veterans Services joins Tampa Chapter 787 of the Vietnam Veterans of America, and the Colonel George Mercer Brooke Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in hosting the Vietnam Traveling Wall. The DAR chapter, located in of Sun City Center, is bringing the traveling memorial here in a commemorative partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense for the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.

Visitors to the traveling memorial are welcome to stroll through the 21-acre Veterans Memorial Park to view the permanent monuments and memorials as well.
