The papal gardens of Cantalupo, Italy, inspired the melon's name. That's where the first cantaloupes were grown, some historians say.

When are fresh local cantaloupes available at local groceries and farm stands?

April through June

What types of cantaloupes are grown commercially here?

Cantaloupe is a musk melon. Athena is the predominate variety.

Where are cantaloupes most commonly grown in Hillsborough County?

East and South County. Cantaloupe often is grown in the same fields as strawberries, after berry crops are picked in March.

How many acres are planted in cantaloupes in Hillsborough County?

1,500

How many cantaloupes are harvested?

About 52.5 million pounds, with a total crop value of more than $10 million.

Local insight:

This year's crop is not doing well. The melons are smaller than usual, probably due to hot, dry weather. Roughly half the normal harvest is expected.
