Faces behind the Places
Hillsborough County is full of inspiring, iconic, and interesting places, and there are remarkable people behind them. In this occasional series we explore namesakes of some of the county's well-known buildings, parks, and roads.
Who was Phyllis H. Busansky?
Busansky, 1937-2009, had a lengthy public service career in Hillsborough County. She was supervisor of elections, a two-term county commissioner, Aging Services director, and Human Resources director. A longshot candidate in her first campaign for a seat on the Board of County Commissioners, the Tampa Tribune opined she had "sparkling intelligence, abundant energy and a burning affection for her fellow human beings." As a commissioner, she championed the County's innovative indigent health care plan. She is a 2012 inductee to the Hillsborough County Women's Hall of Fame.
Why name a senior center for her?
Renaming the former Westshore Senior Center to honor Busansky partly stemmed from her role as Aging Services director. She visited the West Spruce Street facility often, and knew its regular clients by name. She went on to distinguish herself in other public roles, maintaining her compassion, attention to detail, and eagerness to listen.
