Brain Attacks / Strokes

Brain attacks ( strokes, CVAs ) are dangerous because the blood flow to the brain is interrupted.

Brain Attacks result when the circulation to the brain is interrupted from:

  1. a ruptured artery
  2. an artery that becomes blocked

A stroke, or brain attack, is a medical emergency that requires immediate medical attention. Because most strokes do not cause severe pain, patients often delay seeking treatment, resulting in extensive brain tissue damage.

Symptoms of stroke depend on the type and which area of the brain is effected. Signs of ischemic stroke usually occur suddenly, and signs of hemorrhagic stroke usually develop gradually.

If any of the below signs or symptoms are present, call 9-1-1 immediately.

  1. Drooping of the face
  2. Weakness or paralysis on one side
  3. Change in behavior
  4. Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  5. Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  6. Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  7. Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  8. Sudden, severe headache with no known cause

Important Points:

  • Check the time. When did the first warning sign or symptom start? You'll be asked this important question later.
  • Not all the warning signs occur in every stroke. Don't ignore signs of stroke, even if they go away!
  • If you have one or more stroke symptoms that last more than a few minutes, don't delay! Immediately call 9-1-1 or the emergency medical service ( EMS ) number so an ambulance ( ideally with advanced life support ) can quickly be sent for you.
  • If you're with someone who may be having stroke symptoms, immediately call 9-1-1 or the EMS. Expect the person to protest - denial is common. Don't take "no" for an answer. Insist on taking prompt action.

If the stroke is from a clot and the patient arrives at the Emergency Room in time, there is the potential for drugs/procedures that will dissolve a clot. Not all patients are candidates for these drugs and procedures.

In transient ischemic attacks ( TIAs ), one or more symptoms occur suddenly, last a few minutes, and then subside. These "ministrokes" also require immediate medical attention to reduce the risk for damage to brain tissue and to evaluate the risk for stroke.
