Florida State Fire Clown Day

Saturday, February 10, 2007 has been designated "Florida State Fire Clown Day" by the State Fair Authority. Florida State Fire Clowns from approx. 20 different departments as well as Florida Division of Forestry, Florida Children's Burn Camp and Florida Fire Marshal's and Inspectors Association will be leading the parade and making appearances throughout the day.

The event is being organized by Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, and is the first of its kind in Florida. I have attached pictures of Hillsborough County Fire Rescue clowns Fred and Myndee (Booster and Edna).

The Florida State Fire College began classes is Public Education through Basic Characterization and Public Education in the 1980's. Students are taught to use the art of clowning to teach fire/life safety. Hundreds of Public Educators, Fire Fighters, Inspectors, Investigators and Fire Executives have gone through the program. Similar programs exist in many states including: Oklahoma, Texas, Indiana and California.

Florida State Fire Clowns all share 2 common characteristics, 1) the "Kello Dot" is a dot worn on the chin in honor of the "founder" of the Florida State Fire Clowns and 2) the Blue Tear, which originated in Oklahoma and was "given" to us by "Cheifo" the clown who visited our clown class in 1994 from Oklahoma. The blue tear (worn on the right eye) to remember all of the children who were never able to see our fire safety message before they were badly injured or (worse) killed in a fire, it also honors all of the children who have seen us and have learned the message of fire safety that they will take with them into adulthood.
