Fire Rescue Prepares For 2007 Wildfire Season

Remember the wildfire season of 2006. March 30, 2006 – 500 acres burned near I-75 and Big Bend Rd., jumping the interstate and coming dangerously close to a 400 unit subdivision, which was followed by an evacuation that bottle-necked on US 301.

Now, 2007 wildfire season is right around the corner and Hillsborough County Fire Rescue in conjunction with the Florida Division of Forestry begins a wildland firefighting class this morning Feb 5 at the University of Florida - Gulf Coast Research and Education Center, 14625 County Road 672 Wimauma, FL 33598.

The class is directed towards gaining a better understanding of the many different influences in the wildfire environment. Fire behavior, fuels, moisture and weather will all be discussed in the class room and then put into practice during the field exercise.

The class dates and times are February 5,6 & 7 classroom from 0900 to 1700, February 8, 9 & 13 the group will assemble for a briefing at this site and go out for the field exercise. The field exercise is located at the Balm Boyette Scrub Preserve, a 5000 acre conservation property. The field exercise involves multiple controlled burns of 60-100 acres each over the last three days.
