Legal Burn Spread to Nearby Property

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL. - March 19, 2008

What: Legal Burn with Exposures

On March 18, 2008, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue responded to a Department of Forestry (DOF) agriculture permitted burn in an orange grove. Reportedly from those on scene, the legal burn produced embers that ignited several shed like buildings on nearby property. Upon arrival the crews found at least two buildings that were burnt to the ground. The arriving crews worked to contain and extinguish the spreading fire and what was left of the buildings.

The burn permit issued by the DOF was for the clearing and burning of an orange grove over a period of three days. Farmers are permitted to burn with permission from the DOF. This fire was in a rural setting within the Northeast corner of Hillsborough County close to the Polk County line.

12 HCFR units responded with 21 personnel including four water tenders for a water supply as there are no fire hydrants in the area. There were no injuries and damage costs will be forthcoming after investigation.
