HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL. - May 2, 2008 4:20 AM
Second Alarm Structure Fire Hillsborough County Fire Rescue is on the scene of a second alarm fire at the Marbrisa Apartments on Gunn Hwy close to the Carrollwood area. First arriving units found smoke and flames and immediately called for a second alarm at approximately 0110 this morning. There are 16 apartments in the affected building; 14 of which were occupied according to apartment management on scene. All of the residents left the building of their own accord. One resident was transported for a non-life threatening injury. Four of the 16 apartments in the building were directed affected by the fire; the apartment of origin was destroyed. Four other apartments directly below the fire damaged suffered water damage. Red Cross is on scene to take care of those that are displaced. The resident of the apartment where the fire started awoke to popping noises coming from her balcony; she woke her husband and they both exited and called 911 from her cell phone. The neighbor directly across the hall was awakened by the smoke alarm coming from the apartment where the fire started. They began knocking on doors to wake the other residents. Hillsborough County Fire Rescue had 15 units on scene with 35 personnel. One firefighter was transported by ambulance for a non-life threatening injury. The cause and determination is under investigation by Hillsborough County Fire Marshall's office; damage estimates will be released later. ###
