CPR Success
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue responded to North Dale Mabry and Zambito at 8:25 a.m. Tuesday September 29, 2009 for an unconscious person with bystander CPR in progress. On arrival units discovered 2 off duty firefighters (Captain E.J. Fernandez, Fire Medic Kevin Martinez) performing CPR assisted by Hillsborough County Sheriff's Deputy Candace Fishel and an unidentified off duty nurse.
Their patient, John LaMonda 59 yom, was pulse less and was not breathing. After performing bystander CPR for several minutes, the rescue unit arrived. Paramedics continued treating the patient and transported him to University Community Hospital Fletcher but not before they were able to get a strong pulse and were only assisting with his breathing. This is an example of how every minute counts. Calling 911 and providing immediate CPR, gave him the best opportunity for survival and recovery. Emergency services workers, health care workers (on duty or off) don't stop working at the end of the day. For them it's a life time, anytime, commitment to those in need. We will be having a press conference and photo opportunity at Pepin Heart Hospital 3100 East Fletcher Avenue @2:00 p.m. on Wednesday October 7. This will be the first reunion of emergency responders and the surviving patient, John LaMonda since the incident.
