Quick Facts About Green Hillsborough
- Hillsborough County is fortunate to have a state of the art Resource Recovery Facility (RRF) on Falkenburg Road that burns over 95% of the county’s household and commercial garbage. Up to 1,800 tons of garbage per day can be combusted at the facility. This combustion process creates steam that produces electricity that is used by several nearby County facilities.

- Hillsborough County Facilities Management has obtained the EPA Energy Star Rating for energy efficiency on several county buildings including the Frederick B. Karl County Center, the Old Hillsborough County Main Courthouse Building, the Court Annex Complex and the Public Utilities/Water Division Administration Building.

- The Public Works Department has completed a retrofit of more than 15,000 County-owned traffic and pedestrian signals with LED lights, as well as replaced overhead street sign fluorescent lights with electronic lamps.

- Hillsborough County Facilities Management uses a central chiller plant to supply chilled water for air conditioning to several downtown county buildings including County Center, the School Board Administration Building, the Old Main Courthouse Building and the George Edgecomb County Courthouse.

- In 2010, Hillsborough County joined the Get Ready Tampa Bay collaborative effort to help bring electric vehicles to the Tampa Bay Area.

- Hillsborough County Fleet Department employs several alternative fuel vehicles including hybrids, a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicle, as well as four hybrid bucket trucks whose platforms are battery powered, helping to reduce unnecessary engine idling time.

- Hillsborough County Public Utilities Department supplies an average of 22 million gallons of reclaimed water per day to more than 15,800 residential and commercial customers and is the largest residential retail reclaimed system in the state.

- Hillsborough County flares (burns off) methane at the Southeast Landfill as well as the Hillsborough Heights/Taylor Road Landfill. The use of flaring technology reduces greenhouse gas (methane) emissions from these landfills by close to 50%.
