Hillsborough County's Code Enforcement Department is responsible for preserving the quality and value of public and private property by eliminating conditions that threaten the life, health and safety of the public. Within its responsibilities, it enforces the Land Development Code, the Minimum Standards Ordinance, and the condemnation of dangerous structures. Code Enforcement also administers the False Alarm Ordinance 04-16 which collects fines from property owners with false security alarms.
In addition, Code Enforcement is tasked with damage assessment roles after a disaster. These roles include initial safety assessment, pre-staging with tactical search and rescue teams, development of damage assessment survey and condemnation and demolition of unsafe structures.
In fiscal year 2008 the department addressed over 16,000 new Code Enforcement cases, performed nearly 52,900 inspections, removed over 47,500 signs from the public right-of-way and collected $1,461,206 in false alarm fines.
