The Property Maintenance Code

Hillsborough County Ordinance No. 09-63, also known as the Hillsborough County Property Maintenance Code, was developed to set standards for the public safety and to provide for the health and general welfare of the residents of unincorporated Hillsborough County.

Standards for Non-Residential Structures

Standards for Residential Structures

The ordinance spells out the minimum requirements that all dwellings in the unincorporated county must meet.

The standards include requirements for:

  • Sanitation
  • Cooking
  • Garbage disposal
  • Light and ventilation
  • Electrical systems
  • Heating
  • Size and unit condition
  • Fire safety equipment

NOTE:

  • Mobile homes must also meet the minimum housing standards and be properly tied down.

Environmental Nuisance Regulation

Environmental nuisances include junk cars, trash and debris, overgrown lawns, vacant overgrown lots and unsanitary conditions that pose a threat to the welfare of the neighborhood.

Examples of unsanitary conditions would be improperly maintained swimming pools, improperly disposed of sewage and insect or rodent infestations.
