Program Initiatives

  • In December 2009, the program was awarded 8.6 million dollars to expand its Early Head Start program by 252 slots.  Hillsborough County is partnering with Lutheran Services Florida and the Tampa Metropolitan YMCA. The majority of the children will be served through family child care homes.
  • In October 2009, the Federal Department of Health and Human Services awarded the program $3.1 million dollars to expand its Head Start program by 151 slots.  The additional funding expands the program’s partnerships for providing services with Hillsborough County Public Schools and Easter Seals and establish a new relationship with Metropolitan Ministries to serve homeless pre-school aged children.
  • In September 2008, the program received a 3 year Head Start Innovation and Improvement Project grant in the amount of $645,000. It is entitled "There's a Caterpillar on My Calabazza!" and it will be used to implement sustainable gardens to heighten the focus of math and science development for the children. In addition to using gardening for the children's development, the project will produce deliverables in the form of a tool kit to share math and science curricula as well as professional development strategies with other Head Start programs across the nation.

  • LET ME PLAY HEAD START - Hillsborough County Head Start Program was selected as a 2008-2009 Let Me Play Head Start training program. The Let Me Play Head Start initiative is a partnership with NikeGO (Nike's signature US Community Affairs initiative), The SPARK Programs (Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids) and the National Head Start Association. The goal is to encourage participating Head Start staff and parents to integrate developmentally appropriate physical activities into their childs day.

  • In July 2008, the program was approved to provide Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten Services (VPK) at 16 of its 22 sites. 500 children are served on an annual basis, which draws in nearly $1 million dollars of additional funding and services to low income children.

  • Hillsborough County CDBG funding was awarded to the program in October 2009 to fund $399,954 of facilities projects. The second phase of this funding extends through September 30, 2009.

  • In September 2007, the program received a $1.1 million dollar Head Start Healthy Marriage Initiative Project Grant. This five year grant strengthens family formation amongst singles, engaged couples as well as married couples.
