Sustainable Gardens
Hillsborough County Head Start/Early Head Start received a 3 year $645,000 grant award provided through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services entitled "There's A Caterpillar on My Calabaza!". Funded as an Innovation and Improvement Project, Head Start will use this grant to implement sustainable gardens at centers in order to heighten the focus of math and science for Head Start children. Sustainable gardens will combine local plants with aroma and herb gardens, as well as seasonal vegetables to interest children in learning about the wonders of the natural world!

Developing a sustainable garden is also a hands-on learning opportunity for Head Start children that will improve their math and science skills as well as expand their knowledge of growth, measurement and sorting. Children will observe the impact their plantings have on soil, learn how to build an irrigation system and develop positive water conservation practices. As an additional bonus, the program will expand the gross motor opportunities for children on the playground. Natural play spaces will involve creating imaginative, creative and exploratory play areas using natural elements to soften the playgrounds.
