Hillsborough County Section 8 Housing Voucher Program

A federally funded program of the Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) designed to provide safe, decent and sanitary housing for low income citizens. Through this program, families and individuals who meet the income eligibility requirements may receive financial assistance to rent privately owned dwellings.

Applying

  • Applications for assistance are accepted during periods of open enrollment. Most recent registration: November 27 - December 15, 2006.
  • Notification of open registration is published in local media resources, the County website, and HTV, Hillsborough County's government access station.
  • A Waiting List is created from applications accepted during the open registration period. Applicants are drawn from this waiting list by order of local priority preferences first, then by application date and time.

WaitList Check -- WaitList Check is the automated website and toll-free phone inquiry system that provides waiting list status information to housing applicants.

Eligibility Factors

Eligibility and financial assistance amounts are determined during the certification process which occurs after the applicant is drawn from the waiting list and NOT at the time of registration. Initial Certification and Enrollment is based upon verification of:

  • Income
  • Family composition
  • Program requirements

Section 8 provides a rental subsidy directly to the property owner/landlord in behalf of the eligible family. Tenants pay their portion of the rent, determined by the Section 8 program based upon the total household income, to the property owner/landlord. The Section 8 program provides a utility reimbursement to qualifying households. Annual Recertification of the household is required for continued eligibility with the Section 8 program.

Finding Housing

Participants are responsible for seeking and selecting housing units. Eligible Housing Units include all types of privately owned dwelling units located within the defined limits of Hillsborough County, excluding the City limits of Plant City.

Inspection

All dwelling units must pass an inspection conducted by a Hillsborough County Inspector in accordance with HUD's Housing Quality Standards and Hillsborough County's Minimum Housing Standards, prior to occupancy and award of Section 8 Assistance.

Zero Tolerance

Hillsborough County’s Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program has a strict “one-strike” policy against DRUGS and VIOLENT CRIMINAL activity. Any such involvement by any member of the household may result in immediate termination or denial rental subsidy assistance services.

NOTE: This office does not offer emergency housing
