Hillsborough County Section 8 Housing Voucher Program
A federally funded program of the Department of Housing
& Urban Development (HUD) designed to provide safe, decent and sanitary
housing for low income citizens. Through this program, families and individuals
who meet the income eligibility requirements may receive financial assistance
to rent privately owned dwellings.
Applying
- Applications for assistance are accepted during periods of open enrollment.
Most recent registration: November 27 - December 15, 2006.
- Notification of open registration is published in local media resources, the County website, and HTV, Hillsborough County's government access station.
- A Waiting List is created from applications accepted during the open
registration period. Applicants are drawn from this waiting list by
order of local priority preferences first, then by application date
and time.

Eligibility Factors
Eligibility and financial assistance amounts are determined during the
certification process which occurs after the applicant is drawn from the
waiting list and NOT at the time of registration. Initial Certification
and Enrollment is based upon verification of:
- Income
- Family composition
- Program requirements
Section 8 provides a rental subsidy directly to the property owner/landlord
in behalf of the eligible family. Tenants pay their portion of the rent,
determined by the Section 8 program based upon the total household income,
to the property owner/landlord. The Section 8 program provides a utility
reimbursement to qualifying households. Annual Recertification of the
household is required for continued eligibility with the Section 8 program.
Finding Housing
Participants are responsible for seeking and selecting housing units.
Eligible Housing Units include all types of privately owned dwelling units
located within the defined limits of Hillsborough County, excluding the
City limits of Plant City.
Inspection
All dwelling units must pass an inspection conducted by a Hillsborough
County Inspector in accordance with HUD's Housing Quality Standards and
Hillsborough County's Minimum Housing Standards, prior to occupancy and
award of Section 8 Assistance.

Zero Tolerance
Hillsborough County’s Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program
has a strict “one-strike” policy against DRUGS and VIOLENT
CRIMINAL activity. Any such involvement by any member of the household
may result in immediate termination or denial rental subsidy assistance
services.
