Social Services
Social Services staff members assess the situation of each county resident seeking social services, and determine their eligibility for various types of assistance. Case managers focus on the holistic needs of customers, and assist them to become self-sufficient through various means, such as by providing help to secure a job, or by providing training that will empower the customer to secure a better job. Limited financial assistance may be provided  to assist customers who are in crisis. Ongoing financial assistance is only available for customers who meet very specific criteria.

Hillsborogh County residents can seek help with social needs at the County's five neighborhood service centers or the Homeless Recovery Program office. At each of these locations, case managers help customers with:

  • Utilities
  • Education
  • Shelter
  • Homelessness
  • Food
  • Transportation
  • Job search and placement

To Receive Financial Assistance, Residents Need:

  1. Picture identification
  2. Social Security cards (for all members of household)
  3. Two proofs of Hillsborough County residency, such as a valid driver license with current address, a letter from their landlord or mortgage company, voter’s registration card.
  4. Documentation of U.S. citizenship or proof of legal U.S. residency
  5. Proof of assets such as a bank or credit union statement
  6. Proof of financial obligation
  7. Proof of income. Depending on the program, the applicant is required to meet different percentages of the Federal Poverty Guideline to receive various tyes of assistance. See Federal Poverty Guidelines below.

Depending on a customer's individual situation, he/she may be asked to provide additional information so that a case manager can determine what level of support the customer is eligible to receive.

Family Income Determines Eligibility for Assistance
The County uses Federal Poverty Guidelines to establish the maximum monthly income a family can have in order to receive assistance.
