We're Rolling Out A New Way Of Collecting Trash
Beginning October 1, 2013, Hillsborough County residents will see changes in how their garbage and recyclables are collected.

In January, Hillsborough County Commissioners awarded new contracts for the collection of garbage and recyclables in the County’s service areas. The award capped a successful competitive bidding effort that will lower annual residential collection rates, introduce automation at curbside, and for the first time bring in revenues to the County from materials to be recycled.

Look for much more information to come as we move through the transition.

Automated Collection
The contracts were awarded for “2-1-1 Automated Service,” meaning that County residential garbage customers will continue to receive twice-weekly garbage collection, once-weekly recyclables collection, and once-weekly yard waste collection. But with automated collection, residents will bring their garbage and recyclables to the curb in wheeled carts provided by the County for emptying by specially-equipped trucks. Two carts will be provided - one for household garbage, and one for recyclables. Yard waste will continue to be collected manually in customer-provided containers.

Single-Stream Recycling
No more sorting of recyclables - all recyclables will go into the recycling cart. The cart will replace the green and blue bins which customers currently use. Also, more kinds of plastics will be accepted.

Commercial Collection
Commercial customers will be able to negotiate directly with any of the three haulers - the same way that collection is currently handled.

Keep checking back for more information as we count down to October 1!
