Commissioner Kevin Beckner
About Kevin Beckner

Kevin Beckner was elected to the Hillsborough County Commission in 2008 and re-elected in 2012 to a second four-year term.  He is one of seven commissioners responsible for approving an annual operating and capital budget that exceeds $3 billion, and one of three representing a county-wide district of more than 1.2 million constituents.  A native of Michigan City, Indiana, he graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 1990 and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with minors in Business and Psychology from Indiana University in 1993.  He attended Harvard Kennedy School’s Executive Leadership program in 2013.  Kevin has been a Certified Financial Planner for more than 16 years.

Since elected, Kevin has pursued a robust legislative agenda focused on:

  • Founding the Juvenile Justice Task Force that led the expansion of the Civil Citation program for first-time misdemeanor offenders
  • Introducing and passing ordinances that shut down pill mills and reduced epidemic insurance fraud related to staged auto accidents
  • Forming a countywide violence prevention initiative to reduce the frequency and severity of violence in our communities

  • Repealing the County policy banning the recognition of gay pride
  • Creating a County Diversity Advisory Council that includes LGBT membership categories
  • Amending the County’s Human Rights Ordinance to include protections from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression
  • Passing a HELP (Health, Education & Life Protections) and Domestic Partnership Registry ordinance, and
  • Providing Domestic Partner and Same-Sex Spouse Employee Health Benefits for County employees.

In addition to public safety and human rights issues, Kevin espouses fiscal responsibility and transparency in government, sustainable growth with respect for the environment, and the importance of investing in a multimodal transportation system.

He is a member of Tampa Rotary, past President of Leadership Tampa Bay, and serves on several nonprofit boards throughout the Tampa Bay area.

When not hard at work for the people of Hillsborough County, Kevin enjoys traveling and spending quality time with his spouse of 15 years, Gil.
