Each is established differently and each carries out different functions. All are funded from the general revenue of the county in which they are situated.

Hillsborough's was initially established by a "population act" and, in 1973 (ch. 73-484, Laws of Florida), by special act of the Legislature. The Office of the Hillsborough County Legislative Delegation has been in continuous existence since 1964.
