Hillsborough A Model School Board
The School District of Hillsborugh County received the 2005 CUBE (Council of Urban Boards of Education, an initiative of the National School Boards Association) Award for Urban School Board Excellence in early October. School District Chair Candy Olson talks with Carol McClendon, District Assistant to Rep. Moffitt Total Care Plan
H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute hosts legislators from across the state but, in October, held a breakfast for Hillsborough's legislators who were briefed on the Moffitt Total Care Plan (TCP). Rep. Kevin Ambler talks with William Dalton, Ph.D., MD, Center Diector and CEO, about the help Moffitt needs from the Legislature to achieve its goal.

What is the Moffitt Total Care Plan (TCP)?
"TCP" is a plan to establish a statewide network that will improve the quality of cancer care for all Florida residents, offering patients across the state to access the newest forms of cancer treatment. Dr. Dalton has had a lot of "face time" with Hillsborough's legislators, in this instance, Rep. Rich Glorioso and Rep. Ed Homan from House Districts 62 and 60, respectively.

A Possible New Municipality for Hillsborough?
Rep. Ron Reagan recently attended a meeting of the Ruskin Chamber of Commerce which focused on downtown redevelopment and a variety of methods to try to reach a viable way to reach that goal. Talking about the study which was recently completed is Wade Clark of the Ruskin Community Development Foundation and an "activist" much interested in making improvements in the Ruskin area. Rep. Reagan is in the blue dress shirt just behind the Chamber person running the PowerPoint equipment for Mr. Clark.

Rep. Reagan Shares a Laugh
There was much comraderie before the Ruskin Chamber meeting. Here, retired General John Paulk shares something with Rep. Reagan which was clearly quite hilarious. Rep.Reagan represents Hillsborough County from the Mantee County line up to Symmes Road.

The Delegation Director Meets the Press
Candace Hundley, director of the Office of the Hillsborough County Legislative Delegaton, was asked to attend the Ruskin Chamber meeting because of her expertise on the local bill process (a "local bill" is a law which affects a limited georgraphic area; the passage by the Legislature would establish the framework for the City of Ruskin, but it would still have to pass at referendum to take effect). Here she talks with Penny Fletcher, Editor of the Sun/South Shore News about the process.

Rep. Reagan Meets with TECO Reps
After attending the Ruskin Chamber meeting, Rep. Ron Reagan drove up to the Apollo Beach Chamber meeting where he spoke about the activities of the 2005 legislature and at the future needs of the state with the 2006 session set to start in early March. Here he is shown with Cheryl Johnson, an Environmental Specialist with TECO (who noted that the Manatee Viewing Center will be celebrating its 20th birthday on January 13 and 14) on the right and with James Adcock, a TECO manager with community responsibilities throughout the south county area. TECO is also a "Flavors of Hillsborough" supporter.

Apollo Beach Chamber Execs Chat with Rep. Reagan
Apollo Beach Chamber President Ray Weedon and Executive Director Joanne Gadek listen intently as Rep. Reagan makes a point.

Rep. Reagan Draws for Door Prizes
Rep. Reagan had a good time drawing business cards for door prizes as the Apollo Beach Chamber meeting was about to draw to a close. In the center background is Chris Deslandes, Director of Services for Bayshore Health & Homemaker Services, and a Chamber member.

Bright House Network officials recently announced it was donating high-speed online services to existing and future computer labs at approximately 60 Boys and Girls Clubs in the Geater Tampa Bay area and added $50,000 based on digital phone orders the company received in September. On hand to hear the announcement was Rep. Rich Glorioso, House District 62, who is engaged in deep conversation with club members Charmaine Belcher and Rokiera Miller.

The Blues Sisters Appear at Tampa Latin Fest
The City of Tampa Mayor's office recently hosted the city's annual Latin Fest in Gaslight Park in downtown Tampa. City Council members and others hosted booths; and in this case, those helping out include Digna Alvarez from Sen. Bill Nelson's office (and formerly with Hillsborough legislator Rep. Bob Henriquez); Jeanette Fenton, playing dual roles as the City's legislative director and now undertaking redevelopment issues in West Tampa as it continues work to "reclaim its legacy;" and Councilwoman Mary Alvarez . All were serving cold beverages on a very hot, sunny day--but we have to ask, "Where are your hats, ladies?"

Rep. Joyner, State Attorney Attend Latin Fest
State Attorney Mark Ober and Rep. Arthenia Joyner, District 59, enjoyed the Latin Fest festivities in downtownTampa as Rep. Joyner also introduced her new legislative assistant, Ana Maria Sanchez, to many in the crowd which enjoyed the lunch hour celebration and fabulous fall day.

Raymond Says "Ola" to Festival Goers
The Devil Rays sent mascot "Raymond" to the Latin Fest along with all-star pitcher Danys Baez. Happily having their photo snapped with Raymond is the new V.P. of Public Policy at the Tampa Chamber, Chris Smith; Rosalie Smith, district assistant to Rep. Arthenia Joyner; and Ana Maria Sanchez, legislative assistant to Rep. Joyner. Other members from the Rays organization were also participating in the event.

Awww, Pshawwww!!
The public was invited for Lowry Park Zoo's new baby's first outing...here is the siting everyone was waiting for! The little guy seemed to be a little shy, at first staying close to his mama, Ellie. The 205-baby later warmed up to the crowd, however, and romped and played in the sunshine to everyone's delight. This is the Zoo's first elephant birth, and the elephants there are part of the Species Survival Plan National Breeding Program, managed by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association.

Craig Pugh Is Always "On" for the Zoo
Craig Pugh, deputy director at Lowry Park Zoo, is indefatigible in his enthusiasm for the Zoo. Here he shares his thoughts with Linda Barrow, Legislative Assistant to Rep. Ed Homan, who attended the event with her husband, John, and her young son, Brock. Brock was much more entertained by riding the camel than he was at looking at the baby elephant! In the background is Dick Stohler, a long-time Zoo supporter and former chair of the Zoo's board who came for the coming-out party with his wife and grandchildren.

A Ringeisen Family Event
Robin Ringeisen, District Assistant to Rep. Ken Litltefield, drove from Zephyrhills with her husband, Ken, and her "grands" Emily and Samantha, to see Lowry Park Zoo's baby elephant and to otherwise enjoy the Zoo. She is chatting with Jenna Labadie and Bethany Friedman, legislative and district assistants to Rep. Kevin Ambler. In the center facing away from the camera is Zoo employee Kristin See.

Staff Turns Out for Farm City Day
Farm City Day has become a popular annual event, and this year several Delegation staff and their colleagues at the Hillsborough County School District turned out to help stuff devlied eggs and cook and serve omelets at the FL Poultry Federation's tent. Working at but also enjoying the event were Rafaela Amador, Janet Roder, and Bethany Friedman, district assistants to Reps. Henriquez, Homan, and Ambler, respectively.

Former State Rep Now Poultry Exec
Chuck Smith, who represented the Hernando County area in the FL Legislature, now heads up the FL Poultry Federation, and is frequently in the community reminding folks of the value of having eggs in their diet. He estimates some 500 omelets were cooked and served on Farm City Day. His wife, Mildred, also cooked and deviled 20 dozen hard boiled eggs for the event. The FL Poultry Federation is also a big supporter of "Flavors of Hillsborough" in Tallahassee.

Think Fast, Think Eggs!
Kristin Waskiewicz from the School District's Office of Public Affairs and Merey Giglia from the District's Office of Governmental Affairs, joined Cori Cuttler, Legislative Assistant to Rep. Rich Glorioso, taking turns cooking omelets as well. Kristin's first experience in this event was at "Flavors of Hillsborough" last April on the Senate Portico in Tallahassee; she was also sporting a lovely new diamond on her left hand, too. Don't think there weren't a great many others demonstrating their farm products at the event--it's just that Hillsborough legislative staff was volunteering at this particular tent!

The Great American Teach-In
Rep. Kevin Ambler had the classroom's attention when he visited Carrollwood Elementary (one of five stops for him that day) for the Great American Teach-in.

Standing as Sentinel, Asking for Input
This meerkat at Lowry Park Zoo is watching for folks to send in photos for use on the next photo album. Send them, along with a proposed caption and in .jpg, to hundleyc@hillsboroughcounty.org. The meerkat also reminds everyone that the next "Flavors of Hillsborough" is April 20 on the Senate Portico in Tallahassee during the 2006 legislative session.
