Legislators In The Community 04
Leading Off with a Fun Picture
Rep. Faye Culp is a huge supporter of Lowry Park Zoo as well as an animal lover in her own right. Here she visits one of LPZ' giraffes, and it looks like it's a mutual admiration society.

Two Familiar Names in the Community
Robin Williams was enjoying her work with CC Event Productions as was Janet Roder, District Assistant to Rep. Ed Homan, as the First Annual Italian Heritage Day was celebrated in Joe Chillura Courthouse Square on April 7. CC Event Productions is also one of the big sponsors of (OK--here it is!) Flavors of Hillsborough , set for April 11 on the Senate Portico in 2007.

A Limited Mutual Admiration Society
John Rodriguez, Legislative Assistant to Rep. Bob Henriquez, wasn't quite as sure that he admired this alligator which was brought around the Capitol as part of Ocala/Marion County Day in Tallahassee in April. John said, "The gator was well-behaved, but it left my hands smelling funny." Do you suppose some might think the last half of that sentence applied to some other Gators and that the first half would be false in that particular application? Go Bulls!

Lake Thonotosassa First Stop on EPC Tour
The EPC Tour Group travelled by HARTline bus, first to Lake Thonotosassa where EPC staff provided an overview of the watershed management initiative and its relevance to water quality conditions in the lake. Lake Thonotosassa is the largest natural lake in Hillsborough, offering public recreational access but discharging water of very poor quality to the Hilsborough River Reservoir, an important source of drinking water for the City of Tampa. In the photo are Janet Roder (Rep. Ed Homan), John McGaughey (Rep. Rich Glorioso), David Jefferson, Mosaic, chair of the Citizens Enviornmental Advisory Committee (CEAC), Dr. Gerold Morrison, Director, EPC Division of Enviornmental Resources, and Becky Simmons (Sen. President Tom Lee).

A Stop at Tampa Wholesale Nursery (TWN)
EPC, SWFWMD, Tampa Bay Fisheries, Inc. (TBF) and TWN (owned by Roy Davis and family) joined efforts to allow treated industrial wastewater from TBF to be reused for irrigation at TWN, saving groundwater pumping by an average of 100,000 gallons per day. In the foreground are Jean Morgan, senior administrative specialist in the Hillsborough County Office of Public Affairs, and Becky Simmons, Legislative Assistant to Senate President Tom Lee. In the backrground are Dr. Wayne Echelberger and Sharon Terrell, both members of CEAC.

Fried Calamari in the Making
Last stop on the EPC tour was Tampa Bay Fisheries, an economic engine churning out in Dover which does not advertise but which processes shrimp, calamari, fish, and crablegs to major markets (examples are WalMart and Ruby Tuesdays). In the photo is fried calamari in the making--starting in tubs of cold water and, via a continuous conveyer belt, it is breaded, baked, bagged, and boxed, then frozen and shipped to market.
|
|
A Treat at the End of the Day
Robert Paterson, president and CEO of Tampa Bay Fisheries, and his staff treated everyone on the EPC tour to a sampling of fried shrimp before the bus headed back to ECP headquarters on Queen Palm Drive. Those who went on the tour very much appreciated the organizational effort that Dr. Rick Garrity, the executive director at EPC, and his staff made in producing both an educational and enjoyable experience.

Rep. Rich Glorioso, in the back row by the State Seal, was invited to attend the signing ceremony for H7173 (ch. 2006-194, Laws of Florida) that re-vamped the "Road to Independence Program" and which provides additional assistance and support services to young folks in foster care who age out of the system and formerly would be expected to fare for themselves without such support. Rep. Glorioso initially became interested in the program when he read about "Connected by 25" in a local news story. The bill also provided for the expansion of Kidcare coverage for eligible young adults until age 20 and appropriated $6.75M to fund that medicaid expansion.
