History

In 1988, Hillsborough County employees established the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund to commemorate the life and legacy of the slain civil rights leader and provide financial grants to individuals for achieving their educational goals. City of Tampa employees joined the effort in 1992. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department also participates.

The MLK Memorial Scholarship fund provides scholarships to graduating seniors of Hillsborough County regardless of race, age, creed or gender. Each award, worth $1,000, is given based on academic achievement, financial need and community service. The Scholarships are awarded annually in January as part of the official MLK celebration.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund is operated by the MLK Memorial Scholarship Fund Committee, which is a non-profit organization and is comprised of Officers, a Board of Directors and a Board of Trustees.
