The Valrico Wastewater Treatment Plant is being expanded from 6 million gallons a day (mgd) to 12 mgd.
The $55 million project is expected to be complete by the Spring 2009.
During their expansions, the Valrico Wastewater Treatment Plant and Falkenburg Wastewater Treatment Plant will be outfitted to use ultraviolet light, rather than chlorine gas, to disinfect the wastewater.
The technology uses banks of ultraviolet lamps to deactivate the bacteria in the wastewater. This method will help the plant meet new EPA guidelines.
