Project Description:

Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System (THPL) promotes lifelong learning, an informed citizenry, individual intellectual freedom, enhanced quality of life and broadened horizons for all residents of Hillsborough County. THPL maintains a network of neighborhood libraries with open access, a community focus, responsive service hours, welcoming environments, broad and relevant materials in a variety of formats and highly qualified employees. The South Shore Regional Library is designed to serve a rapidly growing and diverse community.

Artwork Goals

Many of the finishes in the building include references to old Florida such as tin roofs over some of the computers in the children's area and images of Florida wildlife on the furniture and windows. The selected artwork will be carefully incorporated into the building or surrounding property and may reference the rural history of the area and its agricultural heritage. This Library is conceived as an arts magnet for the community and incorporates an arts activity room for classes and demonstrations.

Opportunities for Public Art

Several areas exist both inside and outside the facility to create public art. Opportunities for art include, but are not limited to the following:

Main Entrance
The wide open area surrounding the Library and adjacent parking lot contain several highly visible vantage points.

Exterior Courtyard
This concrete plaza in between the building and a retaining pond could become a natural gathering place for community events.

Entrance Lobby
This well lit atrium could house a project that brings color to the space and invites patrons into the facility.

Central Corridor in Main Reading Room
The long high ceiling of the main room of the library naturally draws people into the space. A project in this area would be a focal point for the building.

• Artist submission review and short-listed artists selected for proposal phase

Third Quarter 2007

• Artists notified of selections
• Selected artists prepare and present proposals for review
• Public display of proposal documents
