What is better on a dark street than the benefits afforded by street lighting? Hillsborough County's Traffic Services Division's "Residential Street Light Program" of the Public Works Department offers a program that helps neighborhoods get street lights.

Sure, it costs a small amount a month, which is paid once a year along with your regular taxes, but it is more than worth it.

Imagine the feeling of a safer environment that street lighting could provide. Night time activities could become a reality.

Steps in Getting Street Lighting Service

If you should see a street light that is not functioning correctly, please call Tampa Electric Company directly at (813) 223-0800. To expedite the repair, TECO may request the the 10-digit pole identification number.

Steps in Getting Street Lighting Service
  • A written request (e-mail, regular mail or fax acceptable) from a petitioner proposing the creation of a street lighting service area starts the process.
  • The petitioner is sent a map showing the boundaries of the proposed area and a letter containing detailed instructions.
  • The petitioner must obtain a majority of signatures from the residents meeting certain requirements.
  • When all requirements are met, the petition is placed on the schedule for a public hearing held once a year in February before the Board of County Commissioners.
  • If approved, street lights could be installed the following year.
