Bearss Avenue & Skipper Road Intersection Improvements (CIP #69600204)
The existing Bearss Avenue, from Skipper Road to 17th Street North, is a four lane urban road serving a mixture of commercial and residential uses. Because of the increase of traffic and continued development along the Bearss Avenue corridor, the intersection is experiencing an increase in congestion and traffic delays, as well as an increase in accidents between Skipper Road and the Mort Elementary School driveway entrance.
The proposed improvements will include the following:
- Extension of the westbound left turn lane along Bearss Avenue onto Skipper Road.
- Extension of the eastbound left turn lane along Bearss Avenue into the Mort Elementary School driveway, while closing the median opening at Bearss Avenue and 17th Street North.
- Installation of mast arm signals to replace the existing span wire signals at the Bearss Avenue & Skipper Road intersection.
- Replacement of the existing pedestrian signals with upgraded pedestrian signals and upgrade the existing sidewalk curb ramps with ADA compatible sidewalk curb ramps.
- Removal of the driveway connection from Old Skipper onto Bearss Avenue, across from 17th Street North and construct new sidewalk to connect the existing sidewalk on Old Skipper Road to the sidewalk along Bearss Avenue at the current driveway location.
- Reconfigure the median nose at the westernmost Mort Elementary Driveway entrance.
The final design plans are expected to be completed by March 2011. Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2011. The total cost of the project is currently estimated at approximately $400,000.
