The Mapping Services Section is responsible for topographic mapping,
base countywide and location-specific digital terrain and elevation modeling,
along with engineering-grade countywide and location-specific ortho-rectified
aerial photography that can be used for planning and development.
The Section manages six local licensed photogrammetric consultant firms
that are contracted bi-annually. The technology used by these firms spans
a period of history when the services provided were strictly for military
reconnaissance. The technology used today is some of the newest digital
mapping & photogrammetric services in the surveying and mapping industry.
This section also creates graphic displays, aerial mosaics, performs
digital aerial re-sampling, custom aerial maps and offers printing reprographic
services of survey & mapping records/plans to other governmental agencies,
departments, the private sector and the public. The section currently manages
over 14,000 historical aerial photographs, 71,000 Microfiche slides and
a database of as-builts and record drawings.
In mapping large areas, corridors or specific locations, this section
manages cost-effective contract services for the following:
- Airborne GPS
- Airborne LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging),
which is the use of a laser to measure distances
from an airborne platform.
- Photo Lab Services
- Photogrammetry
- Digital Terrain Modeling & Digital
Elevation Modeling
- Data Conversion
- Cartography
- Remote Sensing
- Geographic Information System Services
- Digital Photography/Imagery
that is rectified to the terrain of the
earth
The section’s remote sensing service also provides some of the
newer technologies available for flood plain mapping, environmental analysis,
forestry & agriculture management and corridor mapping.
