The Hillsborough County Solid Waste Management Division (SWMD) is responsible
for the overall operation of the Hillsborough County Integrated Solid
Waste Management System (System) which provides for the collection, transportation,
and disposition of all of the solid waste generated or brought into the
System service area. This service area is well defined by State legislation
as the unincorporated area of the County as of June 1983. In addition,
based on inter-local agreements with the City of Tampa and Temple Terrace,
the System also provides various services to these communities.
To accomplish this mission, the SWMD provides a wide range of services
which combine to make up the Integrated System. These services are provided
utilizing 139 budgeted positions which are organized into the following
Sections.
- Fiscal Services
- Customer Services
- Landfill Services
- Management & Environmental Services
- Transfer/Operations Services
The SWMD's efforts are focused on quality customer service and on the
continuous improvement of the effectiveness and efficiency of the services
provided.
Distinguishing Attributes of the System
There are many attributes of the System which distinguish it from other
solid waste management systems across the country and have resulted in
the System being recognized as one of the foremost solid waste management
systems in the country. While many solid waste management systems possess
some of these attributes, very few possess all of these attributes. Click

Integrated Solid Waste Management System Services
The services provided by the System can be divided into two distinct
categories: those services directly related to the disposition of the
solid waste; and those services which support the disposition services.
It is important to note that one requirement which is critical to the
successful operation of the System is that customers must properly separate
their solid waste.
