Yard Waste Put To Good Use

Residential customer yard waste is collected separately in Hillsboroug County and is recycled into many different products. Curbside separation of yard waste from other solid waste was initiated to avoid a costly expansion of the Resource Recovery Facility, the County’s solid waste incinerator. This separation also ensures that any solid waste disposed of in the County’s Class I Landfill is free of> yard waste as mandated by the State of Florida ban on yard waste in landfills. Since required separation began in October of 1997, over 100,000 tons of yard waste as been collected for recycling.

Consolidated Resource Recovery, Inc. (CRR) currently has yard waste compost and mulch products available for sale at all three yard waste processing facilities. Products are available in bulk for $10.00 per pickup load and CRR personnel will load your pick-up for you with a front-end loader. The sites are open Monday through Saturday, 7:30AM to 5:30PM. Commercial customers may also buy products in bulk by the cubic yard by contacting Mike Mc Donald of CRR at (888) 756-0977, Extension 237.

The yard waste collected at curbside, is processed at one of the following County Yard Waste Processing Facilities located at:
350 Faulkenburg Road, 8001 W.
Linebaug Avenue, and
13001 U.S. Highway 41 South.
Residents are also allowed to deliver yard waste directly to these three facilities which are operated by a private contractor, Consolidated Resource Recovery, Inc. (CRR). CRR manages the sites, processes the incoming yard waste into recyclable products, and markets the end products.

The products currently produced by CRR include different quality grades of mulch, compost, soil amendments, fuel for electrical generating plants, and other beneficial by-products.

Shouldn’t You Be A... "Waste Watcher"

The Hillsborough County Solid Waste Management Department – in cooperation with the Recycling Task Force of Hillsborough County, Cities of Tampa and Plant City, and the YMCA – sponsored a waste reduction and recycling awareness campaign at local YMCAs during the month of October.

Hillsborough County staff were on hand at the Brandon and Bob Sierra YMCAs to distribute waste reduction information and sport bottles made from recycled milk jugs to participants as
part of the recycling awareness campaign.

You too can become a waste watcher simply by being a waste conscious shopper! Here are some
shopping tips that will help reduce your family’s household waste:

  • Buy products with less packaging
  • Choose loose produce items over pre-packaged produce
  • Buy in bulk rather than smaller individual servings
  • Select concentrates and refills
  • Pick up products in flexible packaging

STOP WASTE BEFORE IT STARTS!   It’s not only simple – it’s good for you!
