Project
Re-Compute
Project Re-Compute is a pilot project to determine the feasibility of collecting, recycling and refurbishing end of life (EOL) electronic equipment. The Recycling Task Force of
Hillsborough County will conduct this project under a contract with Hillsborough County as part of a state funded Household Hazardous Waste Innovative Grant. Matching funds have been
provided by GTE, with donated in-kind services by Hillsborough County Public Schools and Secure Environmental Electronics Recycling, Inc.
Project Re-Compute has three goals:
-
to survey the population of Hillsborough County on EOL electronic equipment issues,
-
to conduct pilot neighborhood collections,
-
to recycle useable computers back into the school system or safely de-manufacture the unusable equipment.
Computers, televisions and most electronics are considered hazardous waste since they contain lead, copper, selenium and mercury. However, they also contain recyclables such as gold,
silver, copper, steel and plastic. The safe recovery of these materials is a primary goal of this project. A recent industry survey estimates that last year 24 million computers became
obsolete and the number will mushroom to 315 million computers within 4 years.

It Would Be A Real Waste To Miss These Upcoming Events
The Art of Recycling Show
The 8th Annual Art of Recycling Exhibit will be at the Tampa Museum of Art from April 25th through May 21st. Scrap plywood, broken concrete, plastic bottles, an old deck of cards, and
used CDs may seem to have nothing in common, but to young artists with a vision these materials become the core of extraordinary art - The Art of Recycling!
This annual art competition is open to Hillsborough County high school and college students. The exhibit is hosted by the Tampa Museum of Art, underwritten by local businesses, and
sponsored by the Recycling Task Force of Hillsborough County. Students are challenged to create their art from recycled materials that must account for at least 70% of the finished piece
of art. The only other limitation is that the artwork must fit through a standard doorway. And the artists push this limit every year! Hanging from the I-beams in the ceiling, one piece
of art in last year's exhibition weighed 800 pounds and was more than 7 feet tall!
For exhibit hours, call the Tampa Museum of Art at 274-8130.
