| On December 6, 2006 the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners created a Transportation Task Force to provide recommendations on ways to improve transportation in Hillsborough County. The Task Force presented its Phase I recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners on August 1, 2007. Those recommendations were subsequently included and approved in the County’s 2007-2013 Capital Improvements Program. Phase II meetings began on December 3, 2007. The second phase will concentrate on regional issues and longer term transportation recommendations.
The Task Force, as part of the second phase, focused on recommendations for mid and long term mobility needs that would provide for greater economic development and redevelopment opportunities and ensure sustainable growth. These proposed improvements include rail, bus expansion, road and intersection improvements as well as other projects. The Task Force hosted public meetings, along with the Metropolitan Planning Organization, HART and TBARTA, in May and June 2009 to discuss the components of the transportation plan and how it may be funded in Hillsborough County. The Task Force approved a final set of recommendations in October 2009, that included a proposed one-cent transit sales tax, and brought them to the County Commission in November 2009. The Commission approved the recommendations, and voted to ask the County Attorney to start drafting wording for a draft referendum on the proposed sales tax for a vote in November 2010.
The County Commission is currently seeking public input on the list of proposed transit and non-transit projects that would be funded by the proposed future one-cent transit sales tax. The recommended projects include transit and non-transit projects, such as light rail, bus service expansion, road improvements, and pedestrian and bicycle improvements. The one percent sales tax will be split 75 percent for transit and 25 percent for non-transit.
