State of Florida and Hillsborough County codes and regulations require annual testing of all backflow prevention assemblies.
Backflow assemblies allow potable water to move in only one direction to the point of delivery, preventing contaminated water from re-entering the potable water supply system. These mechanical devices have internal seals, springs, and moving parts that are subject to fouling, wear, or fatigue. Periodic testing with properly-calibrated gauge equipment helps ensures they are functioning properly.
Backflow prevention assemblies are installed on commercial and industrial properties, as well as property owned by Hillsborough County, the state of Florida and the federal government. The assemblies also are installed on residential properties with wells; all of these assemblies must be tested. In addition, all residential irrigation systems permitted after 2001 must be tested.
The testing of all backflow assemblies must be completed in accordance with approved standards and performed only by certified testers who have registered with Hillsborough County. Property owners have the sole responsibility for the prompt return of completed Test and Maintenance report forms to the Water Resource Division’s Cross-Connection Unit.
In the event a test fails, an extension may be granted for needed repairs or replacement of the backflow prevention assembly. All requests for an extension must be made in writing.
