Overview

Apply for a Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) permit if your project or special event will impede traffic in any way, shape or form, or for any work done within 15 feet from the edge of the roadway. You only need a TTC permit for any work or event lasting longer than two hours.

Fees

  • Base application fee: $50 per permit
  • Collector or arterial traffic lane closed: $150 for each lane

Checklist

  • Make sure that the address for your proposed project lies within unincorporated Hillsborough County. We do not issue permits for projects within the municipalities of Tampa, Plant City or Temple Terrace.

    • For temporary road closures lasting more than seven consecutive days for private applicants, BOCC approval is required, per BOCC Policy 09.01.01.01

Things To Consider

  • See the Utility Accommodation Guide for complete and detailed information on policies and procedures for Right-of-Way (ROW) and TTC permits
  • Several entities that operate within Hillsborough County are exempt from permitting fees under certain conditions. Failure to provide the name of the entity you are working for can lead to incorrectly applied charges and undue processing delays.
  • You must pay all fees at the time of the application
  • All temporary road closure permit applications must be received 30 days prior to proposed implementation date
  • Times and dates on permits are for normal workdays only
    • High volume roads: 9 AM to 4 PM
    • Low volume roads: 8 AM to 5 PM
    • Any work done outside these hours must be approved on a separate permit
  • For social events
    • You must observe all County safety regulations
    • Take measures to safely conduct the public through the project area, including displaying safety devices
  • For all road closures
    • You are required to post Portable Message Signs (PMS) as public notification on the subject roadway a minimum of seven days prior
    • Notification sign must include the following:
      • Proposed start and finish date of the closure
      • Special hours of the closure, if applicable
      • Telephone number, (813) 272-5275, for additional information
  • For road closures of more than 7 consecutive days (private applicants), BOCC approval is required, per BOCC Policy 09.01.01.01

What's Next

  • Staff will review and return the application within 5 days of receipt
  • Complex projects requiring extensive travel lane realignments, traffic signal modifications, or multiple closures will require an extended review time
