Mass Casualty Exercise Set for Thursday, March 30

Hillsborough County, Fla. (March 29, 2017) - Hillsborough County will join the Florida Department of Health, local first responders, and area hospitals to test their emergency operations plans in response to simulated active-shooter incidents at various locations during the County's annual mass casualty exercise on Thursday, March 30.

This year's exercise will focus on the health care system's ability to respond to and treat victims injured during an active-shooting incident. Approximately 500 student volunteers will be sent to 15 local hospitals for triage.

Tomorrow's exercises will take place at Hillsborough Community College (HCC) and James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital. As part of the countywide exercise, HCC has partnered with the Tampa Police Department to coordinate a simulated active-shooting exercise on Hillsborough Community College's Dale Mabry campus involving one or more gunmen and student "victims." A second simulated active-shooting exercise will take place Thursday at James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital's Central Energy Distribution Plant.

Coordinated by Hillsborough County, the annual mass casualty exercise provides real-time testing for emergency activation plans that guide response before, during, and immediately after an emergency or disaster situation. Partner agencies and participants will assess their current policies and procedures to help determine needs and capabilities.
