County to Recognize 83 Students at Scholarship Ceremony

Scholarships Will Assist Students in Continuing Their Education

Hillsborough County, Fla. (June 13, 2017) - Achieving a higher education is an important goal for young people and their families. Tomorrow, Hillsborough County officials will award scholarships to 83 students, assisting them in reaching their goals and recognizing them for their academic achievements. The 6th annual awards ceremony will be held Wednesday, June 14, from 5 to 6 p.m. at Franklin Magnet Middle School, 3915 E. 21st Ave. in Tampa.

Hillsborough County Social Services partners yearly with the Community Action Board to offer scholarships worth up to $5,000 to eligible students wishing to continue their education by attending an institution of higher learning. Scholarships are awarded to both high school and college students, and recipients are selected based on thorough evaluations of their application materials. Criteria used to evaluate applicants includes community service and school involvement, application and additional letters of recommendation, academic record, essay response, and panel interview participation. The scholarships are made available through Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) funds, which are implemented through recommendations made by the Community Action Board. Comprised of public officials and community stakeholders, the Community Action Board reviews programs and available funds that serve low-income communities of Hillsborough County.

The 83 students that will be recognized at this year's awards ceremony represent 19 different Hillsborough County high schools and 20 different institutions of higher learning. Visit the scholarship webpage for additional information about the scholarship program.
