Fire Rescue Chief and Cadets to Paint Home of Blind Veteran

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue's 1st Year at Paint Your Heart Out Tampa

Hillsborough County, Fla. (April 12, 2019) - Hillsborough County Fire Chief Dennis Jones is taking his Fire Rescue Cadets and staff to the home of a blind Korean War veteran on Saturday to paint the family's home as part of the 31st annual Paint Your Heart Out Tampa (PYHOT) event.

The Hillsborough County Fire Rescue team will be on site this Saturday, April 13, to freshly paint the home of William and Maria Velez - one of 100 homes that will be painted across the community. Fire Rescue cadets also will install new smoke detectors in the home and offer new smoke detector installation to any neighbor who may need one.

Chief Jones is proud to have Hillsborough County Fire Rescue participating in the PYHOT event for the first time in its history. Event organizers only recently extended the event outside of the City of Tampa, so the Velez home is among the first in unincorporated Hillsborough County to get a paint upgrade.

This event will serve to show Fire Rescue cadets, many of whom are teenagers from diverse backgrounds, that it is important to establish relationships and serve the community beyond emergency situations, according to Chief Jones. Cadets and staff have been trimming bushes and pressure washing the Velez home during the week to prep it for painting on Saturday.
