County Awards More than $205,000 in College Scholarships

49 Students Get Help in Continuing Their Education

Hillsborough County, Fla. (June 10, 2019) - A scholarship gives a student an opportunity to be focused on study, and not worrying about how they will pay for their education. Hillsborough County officials will award scholarships to 49 students this summer, assisting them in reaching their education goals and recognizing them for their academic achievements.

From Gators and Grizzlies to Knights and Commodores, this year's Community Action Board Scholarship recipients will be attending 17 different institutions of higher learning starting this fall.

The 9th annual awards ceremony will be held Wednesday, June 12, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Hillsborough Community College Ybor Campus Performing Arts Building.

In the past five years, 300 scholarships have been awarded, amounting to more than $1.2 million. Of the 49 students who will be recognized at this year's awards ceremony, 57 percent are new recipients.

Hillsborough County Social Services partners yearly with the Community Action Board (CAB) to offer scholarships worth up to $5,000 to eligible students wishing to continue their post-secondary education.

Scholarships are awarded to both high school and college students, and recipients are selected based on thorough evaluations of their application materials.

Criteria used to evaluate applicants include community service and school involvement, application and additional letters of recommendation, academic record, essay response, and panel interview participation.

The scholarships are made available through Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) funds, which are implemented through recommendations made by the Community Action Board. Comprised of public officials and community stakeholders, the Community Action Board reviews programs and available funds that serve low-income communities of Hillsborough County.
