Community Invited to Public Meeting on Van Dyke Road Project

Hillsborough County, Fla. (Nov. 18, 2019) - Hillsborough County is hosting a public information meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 20, to discuss the recommended alignment alternative for Van Dyke Road from Whirley Road to the Suncoast Parkway.

The proposed changes include safety and operations improvements to the corridor to ease congestion during peak hours and create smoother turning movements.

As part of the roadway design project, Hillsborough County is incorporating Vision Zero principles that enhance safety for all roadway users.

The alignment recommendation will expand the road to four lanes with a grassed median and new 10-to 12-foot shared use paths on either side of the road for pedestrians and bicyclists. The proposal also provides a trail connection to the Upper Tampa Bay Trail and Northdale Lake Park Trail.

The roadway design proposal includes three new roundabouts, which are proven to be safer and allow for turning traffic to move more smoothly through intersections while keeping traffic continuously moving. One of these three new roundabouts has a "peanut" (also known as a "dog bone") design which would be the first of its kind in Florida, according to FDOT. The peanut design makes the traffic circle more oblong so that it can accommodate entry points that are further apart. This design is proposed at the intersection of Van Dyke Road, Darby Lane, Lake Reflection Boulevard and the entrance to Grace Family Church.

Roundabouts are excellent roadway improvement solutions in areas like Van Dyke Road where traffic is heavy at peak times and intersections have vehicles making frequent left hand turns. Roundabouts are safer than intersections with traffic signals because they force vehicles to slow down as they enter the intersection. Deaths from vehicle crashes are reduced dramatically in studies. Roundabouts also are better for the environment as they cut down on vehicle idling time.

Attendees can review and ask questions on the upcoming $40 million Capital Improvement Project. The meeting will have an open-house format, with project displays available for viewing.
