At Bubby's Early Learning Hive, the Sky's the Limit for Learning through Play

Jimmie B. Keel Library to host celebration on Saturday to unveil new children's area

Hillsborough County, Fla. (Jan. 10, 2020) - Proving yet again that libraries are more than just books, the Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library is set to unveil a special new space devoted to helping youngsters learn through play.

An opening ceremony for Bubby's Early Learning Hive is scheduled on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 11 a.m. The library is located at 2902 W. Bearss Ave. in northwest Hillsborough County.

Several libraries in the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library system feature "hives" - areas that are set aside for makerspace, recording studios, technical design, and other creative pursuits. Bubby's Early Learning Hive is designed especially for children under the age of 6, offering fun activities such as a puppet stage, building blocks, puzzles, and a sensory wall. With a theme of "The Sky's the Limit," the room is framed in colorful, whimsical murals.

Play is one of the best ways for young children to learn language and literacy skills. Children also develop social and cognitive skills, mature emotionally, and gain confidence during play.

Bubby's Early Learning Hive was funded by a private donation. It is the second of its kind in the library system. There is an Early Learning Hive at the New Tampa Regional Library, and another will be included in the new Riverview Branch Library when it opens later this year.
