Hillsborough County Hosts Shred Fest 2021 on March 6

A safe way to declutter sensitive documents and electronic devices

Hillsborough County, Fla. (Feb. 25, 2021) - As part of National Consumer Protection Week, Hillsborough County Consumer & Veterans Services wants to help residents avoid identity theft by safely destroying dated, sensitive information at the annual Shred Fest 2021.

The event will be held from 9 - 11 a.m. March 6 at Veterans Memorial Park, 3602 U.S. 301 N. in Tampa.

Residents can drop off their old cellphones, personal computers, laptops, tablets, and hard drives to be securely destroyed by an industry-approved and certified recycler.

Document shredding remains an option at Shred Fest 2021. Documents that will be accepted for shredding include:

  • Old bank documents
  • Old tax records - the Internal Revenue Service offers guidelines on how long to keep tax records
  • Unnecessary bills and receipts
  • Unnecessary medical records containing personal information
  • Expired home and car insurance policies
  • Junk mail such as credit card offers with personal information, including name and address
  • Old travel documents, including boarding passes
  • Sticky notes or other notes containing passwords
  • CDs and DVDs (no three-ring binders permitted)

Document shredding will be limited to three copy paper-size boxes or kitchen-size trash bag containers per vehicle. White or clear bags are preferred over black trash bags.

All services are free, and first come, first served. No commercial shredding will be permitted.

The annual event offers free education and services as part of National Consumer Protection Week, which is held from Feb. 28 through March 6.

Shred Fest 2021 is a drive-thru opportunity with on-site assistance provided under Centers for Disease Control and Prevention health and safety guidelines. Attendees are encouraged to remain in their vehicles, and consumer protection experts will be available to answer questions.
