Hillsborough to Improve Orient Road/East Sligh Avenue Intersection
Hillsborough County, Fla. (July 8, 2021) - Hillsborough County soon will begin construction on the proposed Orient Road and East Sligh Avenue intersection project.
Impacts for residents and commuters in the area include an expected 10-day closure of the west leg of the intersection (Sligh Avenue). Other intermittent road closures may occur throughout construction. Advance notice will be given for road closures, and motorists can expect temporary traffic pattern changes during construction. Residents and commercial property owners can visit HCFLGov.net/HCEngage at any time from July 9 to July 23 to learn more about the project and offer comments.
The proposed project will improve traffic and safety conditions by adding three new turn lanes and a traffic light in accordance with the County's Vision Zero initiative. The project adds a northbound to westbound left-turn lane from Orient Road onto Sligh Avenue, an eastbound to southbound right-turn lane from Sligh Avenue onto Orient Road, and a northbound to eastbound left-turn lane from Sligh Avenue onto Orient Road.
In addition, the intersection will be controlled by a traffic signal. The project includes drainage and sidewalk improvements. The intersection improvements and sidewalk connections will reduce congestion and improve motorist safety. The project also enhances pedestrian and bicycle safety by incorporating Vision Zero principles such as ADA-compliant sidewalks.
Construction is expected to begin in fall 2021, with work expected to be complete by late 2022.
Traffic control devices and directional signage will be used to provide for the safe and efficient movement of all road users, including pedestrians, motor vehicle drivers, and bicyclists. Safe access to homes, schools, and businesses will be maintained throughout construction.
The County will conduct a virtual engagement using the Hillsborough Engagement Hub to collect feedback from the public. Public comment for this project is open between July 9 and July 23 at 11:59 p.m. Visit HCFLGov.net/HCEngage to participate.
