Intersection Upgrades on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard near USF Will Improve Safety
Hillsborough County, Fla. (Aug. 25, 2021) - A stretch of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard between Richard Silver Way and Campus Hill Drive near the entrance to the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital will undergo a redesign with a new traffic signal, pedestrian access upgrades, and bike lanes to improve safety for all users of the roadway.
This project will add a new traffic signal at the intersection of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard at Richard Silver Way (the entrance to the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital) and at the intersection of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard at Campus Hill Drive. Additional pedestrian safety improvements include sidewalks, curb ramps, and buffered bike lanes between University of South Florida (USF) Pine Drive to Holly Drive. Geometric improvements will be incorporated into the existing turn lanes to support the new traffic signals and enhanced pedestrian safety features.
In addition to the two new traffic signals, new sidewalks will be built on both sides of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard from Pine Drive to Holly Drive, with a seven-foot buffered bike lane and raised traffic separators to physically separate bicyclists from vehicles.
The project is expected to reduce traffic congestion, improve pedestrian safety, improve drainage, and make it easier for residents and patients to enter and exit the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital. The project could be complete by the end of 2022. It is jointly funded by Hillsborough County and James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital.
